My thoughts on the aftermath of a thread

I’m quite fond of a G.B.Shaw quote, regarding arguing with ideologues and zealots, and his simple philosophy on dealing with them. “I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.”

I think this cuts right to the heart of the matter. Trolls exist only because they are allowed, even encouraged, to exist by the very people who seem to detest them. If the purpose of a troll is to elicit emotional responses from their targets, manipulate discourse, and prevent intelligent dialogue by shouting the loudest, then by the time you’ve jumped into the mud to wrestle that pig, you’ve already lost the match.

Another way I like to put it is that arguing with a troll is like banging your head against a brick wall to knock it down. You end up with a headache and the wall is just as thick as when you began. So, forget about trying to prove your point or convince a troll. Like fire needs oxygen to survive, so does a troll need willing participants to succeed.

Screaming and shouting may sound loud from within an echo-chamber, but without anything to bounce off of, echoes do not exist. Inside the right wing echo chamber, the histrionics are deafening. Remember, Mitt Romney was going to win by a landslide. Outside was another story. Mitt got crushed. Turd-Blossom Rove (any so many Wingnuts like him) remained in his echo chamber until Meg Kelly literally took a walk down the halls at Fox News HQ on election night and burst his bubble, live on national TV.

Those who reside inside the right wing echo chamber are, and will remain, convinced that the volume of their arguments correlates to legitimacy – kind of like how Fox News tries to rationalize the legitimacy of their partisan propaganda by citing their ratings successes as often as possible. Nothing will change their minds.

And just as McDonald’s cannot be considered fine dining even though they are one of the world’s largest dining establishments, neither can Fox, despite how vocal they may be about it. And neither can trolls claim success based solely on the quantity and volume of their arguments.

But, I have found some success in using a tactic that I notice being used on the right. If/when I wish to make a point, I try to do so without regard to any follow-up commentary. I never take the bait from a troll. I never address any question / criticism by a troll intended to take my commentary off-point or hijack the thread. I never respond to insults regarding my post – at least not directly in a follow-up to one of my posts. By the time a troll gets all wrapped up in a comment thread, I've moved on – there is no shortage of topics to discuss. If they want to chase, they can. But soon enough, they realize that they are not in control and are simply following. It’s been my experience that they don’t like to be led around.

Like I said, fire needs oxygen to survive, so does a troll need willing participants to succeed.

I like to think of it as the Ferber Method for ODS sufferers.

That sounds like 'drive by posting' and is considered to be impolite.

Not at all. But, perhaps I’m not the most polite person on the interwebs. Alas, let me re-phrase that sentence: "If/when I wish to make a point, I try to do so without regard to the follow-up commentary by anyone NOT interested in intelligent discourse." I do not consider all those with opposing opinions to be trolls.

Sorry there Jack_Russell . . .

That post was not directed to anything you've said or done here. It was posted more for some other eyes here to read.

It was in reference to a little tit-for-tat last Friday that started a brouhaha over in the What do think about Ukraine thread.

And is directly related to what you posted here:

Bear with me Jack...

I simply took Schooboy's comment as a snide retort. And then all hell broke loose when a few nit-pickers began picking nits over my last tit-for-tat snide comment there as being uncivil.

Yeah, well, boys will be boys.

I saw Ugg for the first time in what seemed like a millennium yesterday and the Ghost of ET just today in the Sterling lifetime ban thread.

Hey, that's true. Not trying to start anything but did you see Bill Kristol's advice to the media wrt to Donald Sterling? wink

Nope, didn't see it. Bill Kristol is not usually one of my go-to guys for media criticism. wink

Just posted a note in the Bundy thread from a few days ago.

I read all of that thread and, to me, OldenGoldenDecoy, you seem to have little control over being quite personal on that thread, and not in a good way. Sorry OGD, but even your choice of name here seems trollish. Decoys are set out to fool victims into shot gun range. The hell that broke lose was generally agreed upon to be from you. That was my read anyway.

Good for you... Boomer . . .

Where do I get in line for those "smart drugs"? About my screen name? I've had it here at TPM since 2005 and my motto has always been:

Able to fly long long distances when the weather turns sour.
I appear as if by magic paddling out of the tall reeds when the
bottom-feeders in the pond attempt to raise their ugly heads
at the surface.

I'll add you to the list of the gang of 5 and make it six...

Water off a duck's back... and all.

A Gang of Six? Is there any chance we're going to get a bipartisan budget or immigration reform bill out of this?

Yay! That's good news.

Totally expected reply. So your a flying decoy? Never seen one of those. Bottom feeders and ugly heads.
Sweet. I feel for your persecution by so many uglies. "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go." - Oscar Wilde

Feel better now?

Oscar Wilde? That's some high-brow stuff there.

I just have to say I personally don't think mood's actions encouraged his behavior. In fact, the people who encouraged his behavior were those who got mad at him. THAT'S what he was after. I'm not saying moodpost discouraged Hugh's behavior, just that he didn't encourage it. That said, and I, like mood, find it interesting to learn about the person inside the troll, I'm glad he's gone.

All of several generations of my father's side of my family are from East Texas. A few of them still live there.

Pathetic, It's not that others don't get it, it's that others don't appreciate the performance. It's not entertaining nor at all well played. It's just a bad show.
